small business website design

A real website for your business, at a price you can see before you ask.

Most small businesses end up with one of two websites: a template on a monthly subscription that vanishes if they stop paying, or a $2,500–$8,000 agency build that took 4–8 weeks. There is a third option, and it costs $199–$899 once.

The two bad options

Almost every small business owner who eventually goes looking for a website has already tried one of these.

The subscription builder. Cheap to start, and genuinely usable. The problem is not the tool, it is what happens next: the work moves to you, in the evenings, indefinitely. Most of these sites are 70% finished forever, because finishing is nobody’s job. And the arrangement is a rental — stop paying and the site is gone, along with anything you built on it.

The agency project. Real professionals doing real work, at $2,500–$8,000 over 4–8 weeks. For a business at a certain scale this is the right call. For a two-van operation it is a large amount of money and, more importantly, a large amount of the owner’s attention spent on meetings, concepts, and revision rounds during months when they had other things to do.

Neither is a scandal. They are simply built for different customers than the one who needs a working site by Thursday.

What a small business site actually has to do

Strip away the industry vocabulary and there are five jobs.

Say what you do and where you do it, in the first screen, in the words a customer would use. Make one action obvious — most small businesses have exactly one conversion that matters, and it is usually a phone call. Load fast on a phone with a weak signal, because that is the actual device and the actual network. Be findable, which means real structure and real text rather than a page of images. And look like a business that will still be there next year, which is mostly a matter of specificity: your address, your license number, your actual work.

That is the list. A site that does those five things well beats a site that does fifteen things adequately, and it can be built in two days.

Why the price is published

Nearly every web quote is a negotiation about what the buyer can afford rather than about what gets built. That is why “contact us for a quote” is so common and why two businesses on the same street pay very different amounts for very similar sites.

Publishing three numbers removes the negotiation. $199–$899, one-time, the same for everyone, on the pricing page before you talk to anyone. If a package fits, that is what it costs. If it does not fit, you can tell that yourself in thirty seconds instead of a week of back and forth.

Owning it matters more than people expect

The difference between owning a site and renting one looks abstract until the day it does not.

Owned means: the domain is registered in your name, the files are yours on request, and the hosting is a service you buy rather than a condition of the site continuing to exist. You can move it, hand it to another developer, or leave it exactly as it is for five years without paying anyone anything beyond hosting.

Rented means the site is a feature of a subscription. It works beautifully right up until you stop paying, a plan changes, or the platform pivots — and then the thing your customers find you through is somebody else’s decision.

Where to start

If you are choosing between packages, the pricing page lists exactly what is in each one. If you want to see the schedule before committing, how it works is the whole thing hour by hour. If your situation is more urgent than that, there is rush website design and emergency website design.

Otherwise the intake takes about 15 minutes and starts the clock.

Questions about small business website design

More of them on the full FAQ page.

How much should a small business website cost?

The honest range in the market is wide: $2,500–$8,000 from a traditional agency, $20–$50 a month indefinitely from a DIY builder, and a few hundred dollars from a freelancer whose availability is unpredictable. Ours are $199–$899 one-time, published, with the first year of hosting included. What matters more than the number is whether it is a number or a quote.

What does a small business website actually need?

Fewer things than most people are sold. It needs to say what you do and where you do it, make one action obvious — call, request a quote, or book — load fast on a phone, be findable in search, and be believable enough that a stranger trusts you with a job. Everything past that is optional, and most of it is optional forever.

Do I need more than one page?

Often no. A single well-built page that answers what you do, where, what it costs and how to reach you outperforms a five-page site where four pages are thin. Multiple pages start to earn their keep when you have distinct services that people search for separately — that is what the middle package is for.

Is a monthly subscription site cheaper?

Only for the first year or so. At $30 a month a builder passes our entry price in seven months and never stops, and at the end of it you own nothing — cancel and the site disappears. A one-time payment for something you own is cheaper in year two and every year after.

What happens if my business changes?

Small changes in the first 14 days are free. After that you can pay per request at a published rate or take a monthly care plan, and because you own the files you can also hand them to anyone else. Nothing about the build locks you to us.
